World War 1/The Emden

Even though the war took place in Europe, World War 1 still affected Singapore. When people found out about the war, they all rushed to stock up on their supplies leading to the price of food becoming very high. It became so high that man people were very worried and the Government has the restrict people from buying large quantities of foodstuff.The Government also bought more rice from Siam and Vietnam so as to ensure that there was enough food.
For some time, Singapore shipping and trade became threatened due to the German warship, The Emden. The Germans were against the British in the war so The Emden attacked and sunked many British ships. Merchants also feared coming to Singapore because of the warship. Although the Emden never attacked Singapore, but it still affected her trade.This went on until Sydney, an Australian warship destroyed it.
