The Suez Canal is a route which gave many merchants from the East a shorter route to travel to Singapore.Originally, one has to make a big and dangerous loop to travel around the Cape of Good Hope before arriving at Singapore. This Canal cuts through Africa and Arabia allowing merchants to take a short-cut. The canal was opened due to the rise in need from raw materials and new markets. As South-East Asia was rich in raw-materials, this means that there was an increase in the number of merchants that came to Singapore thus causing the need for such a canal. This affected Singapore because now there were even more ships coming down to Singapore to trade and refuel their oil. This meant that the Singapore port became busier as there was more trade taking place.
